Best Places to See Fall Colors in Washington

Olympic National Park

Olympic National Park has every landscape imaginable within its confines. There are beaches with rocky cliffs that merge into leafy green forests, rivers winding through valleys, and snow-capped mountains reaching up to touch the sky. There are even waterfalls scaling steep precipices down into streams surrounded by lush ferns. There’s something to impress even the most well-traveled visitors at this stunningly beautiful national park.

Hoh National Rainforest

Hoh National Rainforest is enchanting, to say the least. One of the largest temperate rainforests in the United States offers guests easy hiking opportunities and serves as a base camp for scaling the park’s tallest mountain, Mount Olympus. As you turn off of Highway 101, a myriad of beautiful fall foliage greets you. Follow the raging Hoh River to the visitors center where you start your journey on foot. Follow the many trails through the thick, towering trees to the banks of the river. The sound of flowing water coupled with the incredible views and colors transports you to a time before civilization existed. If a peaceful dive into a thickly veiled paradise is what you yearn for, this is it.

Lake Crescent

Surrounded by the northern foothills of the towering Olympic Mountains, the deep blue waters of this glacier-carved lake present a picture no camera or painting can replicate. This truly is one of the best places to see fall colors reflect off of the pristine lake to create an excellent viewing experience in an unparalleled setting. Rent a kayak and explore the remote corners of the lake or sit on the rocky shore and gaze at the unbelievable mountain setting. While you’re there, take the short hike to Marymere Falls. See vegetation that looks like it’s straight out of a Jurassic Park movie on the way to the stunning 90-foot waterfall. This trail is easy to access for all ages and is a 1.8-mile round trip.

Strait of Juan de Fuca

There are plenty of bright and vibrant trees to see along this body of water separating the U.S. and Canada. A drive down Highway 112 provides you with opportunities to pull over on the coastline and view the roaring ocean crash against the cliffs covered with a mix of evergreen trees and a rainbow of foliage. This is also an excellent spot for birdwatching as thousands of Canadian geese, trumpeter swans, and Falcons head south for the winter.

Hurricane Ridge

While you might not find tons of fall foliage here, this is one of the most breathtaking spots in Olympic National Park. Enter the park through Port Angeles and drive your car up the winding road all the way to the 5,242-foot peak. The views from the trails meandering around the visitors center offer unprecedented views of the Pacific Ocean, Strait of Juan de Fuca, and Mount Olympus. Regardless of what season you come here, you will see snow, sunshine, clouds, and wildlife. If you’re lucky, you will spot a Bald Eagle soaring through the sky or mountain goats trekking up and down the steep sides of mountains. Hurricane Ridge should not be missed.

Tip: Make sure to check the Olympic National Park website for safety updates, closures, and in-depth information about everything in the park.
